Work With Me: Science Writing and Postpartum Nutrition Classes

I’m Bernice Chu, MSPH, RD. I spent 11 years at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine helping to translate nutrition and health research into federal policy. Now I write, teach, and consult on what I care about most: maternal health, food and nutrition, food systems, and culture. More about me.

I take a limited number of projects at a time. If something here fits what you need, I’d love to hear from you.

Science Writing and Editing

I translate research for clinicians, policymakers, and the public.

At the National Academies, I co-wrote 12 consensus reports for the USDA, the Social Security Administration, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. I led the update of the Academies’ report review criteria, so I know what makes a report hold up under review.

What you can expect from me:

  • Thorough literature reviews, including systematic reviews when appropriate
  • Careful fact-checking against primary sources
  • Editing that blends many expert voices into one
  • Writing pitched at the right level for your audience

You can find my publications in my CV.

Classes for New and Expecting Parents

My classes give families practical, evidence-based tools for the weeks after birth.

  • Postpartum nutrition: what your body needs to recover, what we can learn from traditional cultures, and how to prepare your freezer with simple foods that help you heal
  • Starting solids: when to start, baby-led weaning vs. spoon feeding, how to adapt family meals to babies, and building a healthy relationship with food
  • Vegetarian and vegan pregnancy: how to meet your needs for protein, iron, B12, and other key nutrients while expecting

Classes for Healthcare Practitioners

I teach doulas, midwives, dietitians, and other practitioners how to support postpartum families.

  • Postpartum nutrition and cooking: what your clients need to recover, hands-on cooking of traditional postpartum dishes, and what the evidence does and doesn’t support
  • Knowing your nutrition scope: what you can confidently say about food, where advice becomes medical nutrition therapy, and when to refer
  • Nutrition counseling for Asian American clients: how to give advice that fits what your clients actually eat

Want to teach these yourself? I also develop curricula for your organization.

All classes are available in person in the Washington, DC area or online.
